31 August 2017: Imports and exports of goods which may contain asbestos.<\/p>\n

Asbestos is a prohibited import under Regulation 4C of the Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations 1956. Similarly, under Regulation 4 of the Customs (Prohibited Exports) Regulations 1958, the export of goods containing asbestos is also prohibited. Unless special exemption has been granted prior, absolutely no asbestos is permitted in any imported or exported products. Although many other countries permit up to 2% of asbestos in products, the figure for Australia is zero…<\/p>\n

From 6 March 2017, Border Force commenced a massive clampdown on goods may contain asbestos. One product found to contain asbestos is children’s crayons. Importers are required to perform ‘due diligence’ and request proof in writing from manufacturers that no asbestos has been used in the product in question. Such documents must be submitted to Border Force at the time of import. However, testing of the product may still be ordered, which may increase import costs significantly.<\/p>\n

Of particular interest are motor vehicles, including motor bikes and scooters, ceramic tiles, and prefabricated steel, to name a few products. There is a long list….<\/p>\n

Under Regulation 4C of the Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations 1956, the import of goods containing asbestos is prohibited.
